I have a little holly that has self seeded (not in the right place of course) I went to try to dig it out but the root is as long as the tree is high.If I broke off the root,which is growing into the stone wall, will it kill the holly.

I find it very difficult to transplant self-seeded hollies. As you say, they have these huge, long tap roots and if you break it then ............

Probably, if you've got one seedling you've undoubtedly got more. Look for one that is easier to dig out.
