I have a stags horn tree think it is about 25 yr old. This year it is sending up suckers like there is no tomorrow and the main plant appears to be dying.

Has this reached the end of its natural life-span, or is something else effecting it. (About 5-6 years ago we planted a black lace under it but it has not effected it before.)

I have planted one of the suckers, to replace it, if it does die, but I would prefer not to have to remove the original due to its position if it is possible to save it.

Any ideas thanks x

This is not uncommon - these trees aren't usually long lived grown as a tree, they live longer if kept stooled as a sort of thicket of growth, so yes, its likely the main tree you had is now dying, and the suckers are coming up to replace it.

How do I say thanks?
