Something different about the area in which they're planted? A nearby shrub or tree, having got larger, which is creating lots of shade, stealing moisture from the roots, anything like that?

Thanks for the info. I removed a bush close by last year as it was shading the plant. However there is another nearby that's in similar shade from other bushes with no problem. If nothing appears this year I'll probably redirect it.
