I know that dahlias have to be taken in and have seen Franks excellent blog, but does it also apply to these types of dahlias which I bought as plants and look different from the ones I bought as tubers. I've not grown dahlias before so please forgive my ignorance:-)

I know some dahlias are just for bedding and am not sure if these are the ones:-)

the bedding dahlias do produce tubers in their first year. so if you like them and you want to keep them lift them as you would the big ones.

Do you remember that I had a surprise when the bedding dahlias I planted last year flowered again? I hadn't lifted them - so I was very lucky, Ba!

Thanks Sbg and Spritz. I did leave the Bishop in years ago, and he survived for quite a few years, but he is the only one I've grown before and that was because I could just treat it as a hardy(ish) perennial, I may leave in the single ones which were just described as dark leaved dahlias, and try to lift and keep the other one which is such a prolific flowerer and a lovely soft shade. I bought it as a good sized plant in full flower for £2.99 ..bargain! :-)

That new one I put in recenty - 'Renoir'- is so lovely that I might lift it...also 'Roxy' which has been flowering its head off since June!

The very tall ones I put in this year I simply can't face lifting - they were grown from tubers, so I'll start again next spring. The tubers were very cheap, so if they don't survive, I'm not too bothered.

Now you've got me thinking "should I bother" and there I was being so good lol. Maybe I'll definitely keep Arabian Night lol:-)

If you like one particularly, then keep it, Ba. I'm not 'struck' by the ones I planted this year except the two above beauties...and 'Famoso' which I might also try to keep. That's doing sooooo well.

I want a brighter one or two for the hot border next year, real dazzlers..like a purple/white stripy one! They 'have' to be jazzy, and the right height. ;-)

Good grief, I bet you'll have fun researching them Spritz:-)

Ha! I could always cheat and ask a question on GOY, Ba - but it's more fun to go and look at what the GCs have, isn't it. I also get a catalogue, so I can check in there.

Hey - what was the 'good grief' for, anyway? They'll look wonderful at the back ofthe hot border! :-)))))))))))

After the moaning you did about Patty's Plum! :-)

Ah, but this is supposed to clash! The opposite bed is colour-co-ordinated.
Coral? Eeeuughhhh!!!

Oh, and by the way, to my enormous surprise, that coral poppy has made new growth - so it seems to have survived its rough removal. :-0)

Is it in the hot border?
