the side if my garden was originally a pathwat through my housig estate. the ground below is type 1. have succesgully frown turf but would love to plant two palms either trachycarphus or cordaline australius. people have told me ill not be able ti plant into type 1 but fugured if i duf the hole large enough and filled withe compost then trees would survive? can anyone give me an anaswer?

Hi Mohare and welcome to GoY. I've not heard the term type 1 ground before can you expand on that statement please.

I think type 1 might refer to Type 1 Aggregate.... whether its limestone chippings or some other type of chippings might be important, but if that is what you mean, how on earth did you get turf to grow over it, and how long has the turf been there?

It certainly doesn't sound hopeful, but a lot depends on what the soil is actually composed of. I would have a soil analysis done, myself. If it is primarily clay, there are ways of dealing with that.

I looked up type 1 soil and I would think nothing at all except a few poor weeds would grow in it. You would need to excavate all the hardstanding that was under the path and replace it with some decent topsoil. So it would depend how deep and wide a hole you dug. Even if you dug a large hole and filled with good topsoil remember that the roots of a tree will spread out to the width of the branches. I guess it would have the same effect as growing in a large pot and would need the same care.
Like Bamboo I'm surprised even grass would grow except very sparsely.
