has anyone cut the top off of a araucaria heterophylla. it will not fit in my 12 ft ceiling when I bring in this fall. I know this is a no no, but does the plant die or just stop growing?

yes Tug is correct it wont die but it will alter its shape.
but if you must prune it then that's the price you pay :o)

It doesn't kill the plant, but it takes a deal of skillful pruning to restore the shape of the plant. If you aren't worried if the plant gets wider at the top than at the bottom, and a funky bushy shape, then cut away.
