I have a hawthorn hedge around the house, had it for over 28 years, now it is going brown in places(shriveling up),even made a hole in two places as well.
What can be causing this?

Hi
I dont think it is hawthorn hedge looks more like Pyracantha
I think its "fireblight" is a bacterial disease that kills the shoots.
As far as I know you cant but a spray to sort it out , others on here may be able to help ?
Sorry I cant be of more help

No not privet,it has thorns and gets white flowers and then red berries. It is very, very prickly. Also have a tree of it.
What sort of spray would I need to get?

Yep, it does look like a Pyracantha, and the damage does look like fireblight. In the U.S., we use copper preparations to treat it--which may be illegal in the UK--or streptomycin spray--which I have environmental concerns about--or Bacillus amyloliquifaciens--which may not be available in the UK, yet.
Pruning out the affected branches, plus about 15-30 cm of attached healthy wood may be the only treatment remaining. Be sure to wash pruning tools with 10% chlorine bleach solution between cuts. Future infections are less likely if you apply washed seaweed and earthworm castings every fall.
Wish I had better news, Solada!

Sorry, wrote an answer but it wasn't right when I looked again. I thought it might be Ermine Moth...but no..they eat the leaves. Your leaves are still there, but brown. Sorry :)
