Which is the best hawthorn for the garden. I do not want a hedge, although it will be on the border of my garden. How quickly will it grow. I have a 4metre wide space and eventually would like a height of 3 metres.

Agree with OB, Paul's Scarlet is a super tree and you could always accommodate it if it get too big with an occasional prune.

My Paul's Scarlet is about 3 metres high and the same across after 20 years, in sandy alkaline soil, if that's any help.

As a tree All Hawthorns will grow to 25 feet plus. They all have thorns, some more than others. We have C. monogyna which is the common hedge one, C. persimilis Prunifolia, C. laevigata Paul's Double Scarlet. The latter is probably the most spectacular in flower.
