Also just wondering if it could do with having a larger area of bare soil so there is less competition from the grass?

Ok thanks ill try that with the soil. Someone told me that i should of used string to train the stem as it grew, well this one sorted itself out as it grew. So what its done is gone in and out of the trellis but at no time has it been forced. I've helped it when needed but I can't see that stopping it flower. Any way thanks again.

SBG has the right idea. You would have been better to either have two posts and wires between or square trellis so that you can easily bend the stems to the horizontal which would encourage improved flowering.

True. My suggestion re soil was only an addition to growing the stems horizontal. Don't just let it do its own thing.

What kind of climbing rose is it, Ken? Some varieties only bloom on wood that is more than a year old, while others will bloom on new wood.

well it is growing well. try tying the stems as close to horizontal as possible. this encourages flower formation. which way does the plant face? they do like some sun and if it is in deep shade that will slow down flower production.
welcome to GoY too ;o)
