Fractal is correct note this is poisonous. Drc I don't think there is a red capped button mushroom.

After wet weather and in older specimens, the white patches come off.

Fractal and I posted at the same time MG and yes there is a red capped button mushroom, without spots so perhaps its this one but younger? But I would not have suggested it if I had seen Fractals answer first.

This is a small one the white spots can develop later as it grows.

this one was about 2-3 inches in diameter, there were loads of clumps dotted around the area and none of them had spots

Other way round Pamsco. The white outer sheath tears away during emergence from the soil leaving small patches on the cap. They don't develop later. :-)
