Is this a common wasp type. Never seen it in my garden before.

It's one of the many kinds of Hoverfly, maybe Volucella pellucens. They are true flies, but they imitate bees and wasps to fool potential predators. They pollinate flowers, and their larvae often are beneficial, too, eating aphids and mealybugs.

I agree it is a hover fly.
wasps have a very obvious waist between the abdomen and thorax[chest region]
