My swedes have cracked and split and rotted in the middle. What's the cause and remedy for next year ?

You might want to plant so that they are ready for harvest later in the year. Here in the desert, we plan on harvest in January, in the middle of what little frost we get.

As you haven't had any replies yet I looked this up for you and find it might be the high temps this summer (which we certainly haven't had here in the UK)
