Can you tell me how to get rid of this (see image) which is growing and forming a carpet in my borders. What is it?

as Bulbaholic says the soil is poorly drained. Don't bother with any chemicals just hoe/dig the soil. they have a very poor root system so wont be a problem.

It looks like Liverwort which is an indication of damp and poorly drained ground. You should fork the ground over and dig some humus, compost or soil conditioner, into it.
