I have an acer tree in a very large pot ,when we decided to move it to another part of the garden we found that it had rooted into the ground through the hole at the bottom .would it be an idea if I broke the pot down, removed all the peat and just let it grow ?

welcome to GoY.
if you break the pot away the root ball will still be the same shape as the pot and the roots will dry out.
You can cut the root that's gone into the ground and then either repot into a bigger pot or plant it into the ground. is the new site our of winds if not the tree will suffer severe leaf burn.
