Hi, does anybody know what this vine is? It crept into my garden from the woods. I know nothing about it, but it turned this brilliant iridescent red which I think is awesome. What is this?

It's very pretty. Looks similar to Virginia creeper.

Would it matter if it was as long as you didn't eat it? Lots of things in the garden are poisonous after all. Just don't brush up against it if you are worried as it is a distant relation of poison ivy. Or try it with one finger and see what happens...Its very attractive. Virginia creeper was my thought as well. there's one at the bottom of our road and its lovely every autumn.

Yes it does matter because my cat died from something he ate out in the garden as cats like to nibble on things. Not Costello, but my previous cat. Also I'm contemplating raising chickens. I don't want my eggs tainted or my chickens as can happen with White Snakeroot. Also kids will be visiting for Thanksgiving, bringing their dog & playing ball outside. Does any of this make sense?

Thank You Tug. Settled - It's Virginia Creeper and it is poisonous. It's gotta go, now to figure out how. lol. (Round up?) Thank you everybody for your contribution and timely response.

I've never yet spoken to anyone who, having told me they got rid of X 'because of the children (or the pets), didn't then confirm they had a number of other poisonous plants in the garden when I named them.

I always say 'It's your garden do what you like but if plants were that harmful (there's a big difference between 'poisonous' and harmful') you wouldn't have survived being in your grandparents' garden'.

There are many poisonous plants, and they're in other people's gardens if they're not in yours ... and cats wander about.
Wild plants and weeds can be poisonous too, and so can house plants.
I suppose if you researched the other plants in your garden you'd find some of those are 'poisonous' too.
Virginia creeper can cover whole walls and birds will nest in it.
Cats generally eat grass or grassy plants.

Agree; daylilies are worse, they're highly toxic to cats; the owner of this question grows many of them, according to an earlier blog, so they need to go too, if poisonous plants can't be allowed.

They aren't the only thing that needs to go...

what else needs to go?
personally I always told the kids what they couldn't touch/eat and its only through educating them that they will understand that not everything is safe.

perhaps use this plant to show the visiting children how marvellous leaf change is but that they are not to be eaten. Mine use to collect these leaves from the neighbour to make leaf collages.
