What is the best way to protect a tree trunk that has been scarred against the stake in the wind?

Hi, welcome to GoY, if the stake is vertical, I would remove it, and put it at an angle of round about 45 degrees, and lower down on the trunk, put some ''cushioning'' between the trunk and the stake, and make sure that it's tied firmly enough to prevent it moving too much, [you may have to adjust the tightness periodically, as you don't want it cutting into the trunk], any stake you have should be removed as soon as possible, to allow the tree to develop the strength to hold it's own in the wind, just ignore the damage already done, that should scab over in time, Derek.
