Is it ok to put samphire in the compost bin? The saltiness prompts me to ask the question.

Would have to be a tremendous amount of it to do any damage.

yes it is fine as the small amount of salts will be diluted by the rest of the materials in there. unless you have a ton of it that is ;o)

Salt is a vital nutrient for plants and all forms of life - in controlled amounts.

Yes its OK but it would do you good to eat it....have you tried rinsing a it a few times before cooking it? Good with poached eggs and you don't need to add salt to the egg....(lol)

Oddly, while all animals need sodium for normal metabolism, it's poisonous to practically all land plants. While some plants--including Samphire--have evolved considerable tolerance to it, only plants in the genus Atriplex use it in their metabolism. So, of common garden plants, a few will complain about Samphire-laced compost, many won't be bothered much, but only Orache (Atriplex hortensis) will actually benefit from the sodium content. Chlorine ion, the other half of sea salt, is a plant nutrient for all but conifers, but only in minute quantities. It is very rare for gardeners to need to add chlorides to the soil, especially since the invention of junk snack food! :)

Thankyou everyone, so i can put my small amounts in then.
Stera, poached eggs with samphire sounds like a good idea and i'll try it. I usually put it in stir- frys right at the end. In fact, I've never cooked it. Sometimes, my delivery of it has a short use-by date and I don't always use it up.
It will only be present in the compost in minute quantities.

I'd never seen it for sale before we moved here. I found a large clump growing on the cliffs this summer - never found it before. It was in flower and looked great with the sea as a backdrop. (Too near the edge to pick any!You can see a pic on my blog Three Welsh Pics but its not exactly a closeup!) Have to admit its really too salty for my taste though. Have you tried laverbread?

No I haven't tried laverbread but would love to and will do if I see it for sale. I do like salty although I know it's supposedly bad for us but perhaps naturally salty from the sea isn't too awful in small quantities. I rarely visit large supermarkets as most of my shopping is online these days and that is probably where laverbread is sold. I'll certainly look at your blog - I'd love to see samphire in flower.
