I put about three to four inches of stone chippings at the base which enables the water to soak away, would use paving slabs in place of planks, can lay them yourself on a few scoops of sand to keep them steady. What a lovely task to have.

Hi
Raised beds should be ideal but I wouldn't use planks to walk on as they will become very slippery
