Banked it up on one side and made a small rockery.

If your placing in a preformed pond you will use most of it for backfill. If you are using a liner you will use it to create a circumferential berm over which your liner will go so you can anchor it with hardscape of your choosing. It can also be used to establish a water feature such as a waterfall. Any soil left over can be mixed with other amendments to create a fertile mix for potting or to add to your flower or veggie garden.

the poorer quality subsoil went to the back of ne of the flower beds to build them up higher, then the better topsoil was added to that to plant in.
one of my brothers hired a skip as he didn't have anywhere to put it.
