I would say a Cotoneaster, perhaps Franchetii.

Thank you. Just looked it up and as I thought, it's planted in totally the wrong place. It's planted right, tight up against a waĺl in a bed that is only about a ft wide, then it's the pathway going along the road. Explains why it keeps trying to cover the path and doesn't look very well. Think it's yet another plant to be taken out.

As some of it is flat against the wall why not prune out any thing growing forward and continue to train it as a wall shrub?

Yes, it will certainly lend itself to be trained as a fan against the wall. As Stera suggests, you are halfway there already.

Thank you both, was dreading having to take yet another plant out ?. Will ask Tim at the weekend to put more "eyes" in the wall so can see if I can get it better up against the wall. Can I prune it now?

I would do it now. Rather than putting screw eyes in the wall, I use the old fashioned method of cutting strips of thick material wrapping it loosely over the stems and fixing it to the mortar with a hardened, flat-headed nail. Easy to knock in and take out if you wanted.
