Can you digest a easter lily cactus? If so how do you digest it? Meaning can you eat it?

Hi, welcome to GoY, the Easter cactus, or Hatiora gaertneri, which was formerly called Rhipsalidopsis, is not meant for eating, but is classed as non toxic to humans and pets, but I certainly wouldn't eat it, Derek.

Derek Bubblez said the Easter lily cactus, which is an Echinopsis and pretty spiny. But I wouldn't fancy eating either of them...

Hi Sue, I hadn't noticed the ''lily'' bit, but no, I wouldn't fancy eating that either, Derek.

Could you be thinking of the 'Prickly Pear' Cactus? Prickly Pear and it's fruit is edible once you remove the spines; easily done with a vegetable peeler.

So a photo would help identification. But I've never heard an Opuntia being called Easter lily. Paul I hope you wear gloves when peeling those! I found it a challenge not really worth the effort, lol.

It's usually done for me at the farmer's market where I buy them at Union Square. Leather leather gloves or use tongs.

That's handy. I only saw them for sale once, I think it was in Tenerife, so bought some just to try, as that kind was the first cactus I ever had, before I got the collecting bug.. I'm glad I tried but wouldn't bother again. You had to remove the glochids yourself.

That's not fun. Nothing worse than getting pricked in the throat.

Indeed not. In your hand is bad enough!

Do you mean the flowers? Can't think why you would want to eat the prickly plant?
