depends what you mean by common reeds. In the UK Phragmites australis is the main one that causes problems becoming invasive especially when nitrates and phosphates run off the land. I'm not really sure what you are asking. There will always be some nitrates and phosphates in a natural water course. Even in pure water they will grow though not very well.
