Hi! First time question-asker here :)

I've tried to figure out what is happening to my stems, but I can't find anything else on the internet about it!!

I have a Japanese Aralia, with a good number of stems that appear to have decayed? May I have help understanding what is causing it?

Possibly slug or snail damage?

Did you just recently take it home? It looks like the purely mechanical damage that happens in shipping and handling.
