Not really necessary, it dies back completely in autumn/winter, but I must admit I always chop mine back about now because I can't stand the flowers, think they're horrible!

They also seed themselves all over the place if you don't cut the flowers off!

If left this lovely plant will give you nice autumn interest, the flowers are lovely and look gorgeous on a cold morning with the dew on them, they will die back when they are ready.
