it will come back with a vengiance as it goes im afraid to say . if you want to get rid of it you need to dig it out realy . i did kill one of mine bye covering it with black plastic after cutting it down . i also pored boiling water,salt etc over it and it still took 2 years to actualy die and it was probably only a foot across .

There are over 2000 species of Bamboo, of all shapes, sizes and growth habits, a handful of very well known species are rampant and unsuitable for general garden cultivation, but many others are perfectly well-behaved, so Noseypotters warnings (perhaps about a Phyllostachys?) may very well not be applicable to yours!

Bamboos are grasses, so cutting them back to the base will not kill them, but it will severely deplete their strength as almost all of their food stores are within the culms (canes).

Your plant will eventually produce new culms, but they are likely to be much smaller and thinner than the old ones and it will take a while (i.e. a few years) for the plant to regain it's former size.

i apreciate that a few bamboos are a lot different and are infact grass for sure . i suspect though i could be wrong that this is a rampant one . i totaly dont agree about cutting them down though ofcourse it will take a little while to grow as tall . bamboo is a regrowable harvest well lots of cane types are anyway and lots of grass variaties either naturaly burn or get eaten or infact mowed ilex.
