I have a lemon tree in a pot container thats been in there for 3 years now, I take it inside every winter, will there ever be a time when I put it in the ground, withouit digging it up to take it inside, I am new to gardening but have a lovely show of plants.

depends where you are really. If in the scilies or deep cornwall you may get away with it. they need to be frost free really.
