Some of mine, left in, surprisingly came through last winter and flowered again early in May! - I just cut off the flowering stems as they fade, to get another flush of blooms until the frosts. Some may of course not make it through...up to you if they look like healthy plants.

i always leave my roots in. plus they even self seed .

That's true, I never know where one will pop up next!
