I have a 2m x 400 mm x 400mm planter would this size be suitable to grow a medium size bamboo in (2.5m max) and if so what kind would be best to act as a screen positioned mainly in the sun ? Thanks for any help

If you want a bamboo to act as a screen, you'll need a larger, deeper pot. 40cm isn't deep enough, needs to be at least twice that for the taller bamboos. You could grow Pleioblastus in the size of the one you've got, but it certainly wouldn't be a screen, it's a short bamboo.

« do they need a lot of feeding through summer and much cutting back?
i would certainly think a smal bamboo would be fine. there are many different ones and they are not really a plant i grow. so cant advise there. :o)
