I wonder if the flowers were purple? Looks like deadly nightshade to me. You will soon know if the berries turn black.

Berries have started turning black, is it a weed?

Purple flowers would mean woody nightshade, and its not that - this is deadly nightshade (white flowers, purple berries), proper name Solanum nigrum - its not that deadly, but can make adults sick, and children even more so, if they eat the berries, best removed before the seed pods ripen and you get loads of them growing next year.

Thanks for the information, much appreciated

Deadly nightshade is usually applied to Atropa belladonna with Solanum nigrum being black nightshade.
Woody nightshade, Solanum dulcamara has a light purple flower with a distinctive yellow centre whereas Atropa belladonna is a solid dark purple.

The poison garden is right - got my common names mixed up - its still Solanum nigrum, but the common name is black nightshade (or European black nightshade) rather than deadly nightshade. Still best removed though...

funnily enough I found this in one of the borders today. I do like the way it scrambles and as my kiddy-winks are now grown [and knew what it was from a young age] I will leave it so the birds can enjoy the berries.
