If you live in an area that's likely to have below zero temperatures, then plant it in a pot and give it some winter protection, either taking it under glass, or plenty of fleece. I lost all my Coprosmas in winter 2008 and do that now - even though our area is a mild one.
They are lovely plants, but not reliably hardy, I'm afraid.
