Does it matter what type of bark I put on the soil to reduce the weeds? Will it affect the plants?

Aslong as its had a year to age then there shouldn't be a problem. To new or fresh bark can deplete the soil of nitrogen - not good for the plants. And try to keep it shollow around the crowns of the plants to aviod swamping them and to allow them to grow thorugh it easier next year.

as long as it isnt newly shredded. it needs to 'age' for about 6 months, otherwise it robs the garden soil of nitrogen. if you have a dog then avoid cocoa shell mulch as they will eat it and it is poisonous to dogs.
