Hi All!
Are there any potato experts out there? I normally favour container growing but on this occasion bought more tubers than usual and put some in the ground as well. I followed the instructions but now find as they grow they are very close together.
This has made earthing up very difficult since I am taking soil from adjacent plants. Is it OK to use compost and just pile it up around each potato plant or is there some reason why you have to use the soil in which they are planted? The container ones are grown in compost.

yes just use compost. this will keep the stems in the dark as the potatoes form. don't eat the 'tomato' like fruits if they form.

You can use any spare soil or compost to cover the emerging growth. It keeps in the moisture and stops the growing tubers from the light and going green and becoming poisonous just as you have done in the containers.
