American Painted Lady

yes it is a painted lady . Venessa cardui is its scientific name. we had a documentary about them last night on BBC4. they have the longest distance migration of any butterfly. even further than the monarch.

Really, where are they migrating from? Haven't seen the Red Admiral lately. They come up from the Caribbean Islands. That's where I wish I was right now - - the Caribbean Islands!

the ones we get in the uk start from Morocco then go over Europe by a variety of routes., breeding as they go.
