Has anyone else seen this? We had a greater spotted woodpecker on the lawn yesterday eating a worm just like a blackbird. I didn't know they did that.

I have seen green woodpeckers do it, but not the greater spotteds. It was a juvenile so might have been experimenting!

the woodpecker family that regularly visit us often root around the grass. So its not uncommon. they are lovely birds. this year's juvenile has been in the garden today.
