Hello, I have planted a small “starter” echinacea in my little bed in the back garden. It’s roughly a foot high. I wonder if anyone can advise re. Care of this plant from now, through winter and beyond?
Many thanks.

Hi katy in our neck of the woods you need to keep the centre of the plant dryish, so avoid it being in a low spot where it will sit in waterlogged soil. preferably out of the shade. I don't mulch mine as this increases the chance of slugs having a feast. they don't mind the cold [frost and snow] just the wet. I take the dead leaves off once they have gone black, just to tidy it up to keep OH 'happy'.

Eileen is spot on. I thought they were already planted. They prefer dry, lean, gritty soil with full sun, no fertilizer. Once they are in their place, very little else to do.

Thanks Bathgate and Eileen, much appreciated. Interesting to know about making tea from the plant too!
Good advice all round.

Hi Bathgate, I’ve already planted like previously mentioned. Thanks again for your feedback.

I've been growing echinacea for years. I have grown from seed as well as starter plants. Plant care: pretty much a hands off plant. I just leave the seed heads for the birds all winter. Or, you can start up some new plants from seeds in February, after they had sufficient cold treatment. They require the winter 'rest' period. Nothing you really need to do for them. They are prairie plants from the mid-west plains. They spend much of the winter buried under snow undisturbed with brutal temperatures, but they are safe underground, under the snow. Unless you want to make tea from the roots. You can make a nice tea from any part of the plant, but the roots are most potent (try adding a little fennel). It's very relaxing just before bed. Echinacea is definitely an immune booster. It will help fight against anything.
