I've been thinking of buying a Hydrangea, one of the compact varieties....could anybody suggest a particular one that only grows to about 4ft please?

This link might be useful for you, though whether you'll be able to find the plants is another matter... (Brexit, if it happens this month, will make an big impact on what plants are available here)

I'd choose a Hydrangea paniculata variety - you can prune those hard and they'll still flower, unlike H. macrophylla varieties...

Your soil will determine the colour of the flowers, but I grow 'Preziosa' (pink) and 'Bluebird' which are both smaller varieties

I have Hydrangea paniculata 'Pinky-Winky' as a centre piece in my garden. Produces white flowers turning to pink; just something different. Worth a look?

Since you are still looking, take a look at LA Dreamin'. It's a macrophylla that blooms on old and new wood so it can take a hard pruning. It only grows to 5 feet and I never needed to prune my hydrangea anyway. I just clean up the dead wood and spent flowers. LA Dreamin' is a re-bloomer and has multi-colored flowers all on one bush - pink, blue, purple all on one bush. It will bloom again for you in the Fall. It does need afternoon shade like most hydrangeas. This one is quite striking and I think you'll love it. Here's a link with all the particulars. I just wanted to say hey - look at this one!

You may have to place an order online like I did but it gets delivered to your front door which is quite nice.

This looks like the only supplier in the UK at present:

Hydrangea 'Bluebird' is £14 from Burncoose Nursery (who I use a lot). Search my photos to see a picture of it in my garden

I have recently seen a picture of hydrangea quercifolia and the foliage looked stunning but I am not sure how big they grow :-)

How do I say thanks?
