To dead head or not to dead head? That is the question.
Some say yes, take the dead heads off in the autumn, but others says leave them on the plant/bush until frost have gone and we reach early spring therefore protesting shoots.

what plant do you mean? If its a shrub like the mop head hydrangea then the spent flower heads do protect next years buds. But many plants can be left untouched and the many finches will eat the seeds. Some look very pretty when rimed with frost.
if you want it all neat then chop them down. I will be doing that to many of mine.

As I garden mainly for wildlife I tend to leave almost everything to overwinter. As Grandad says, it is beneficial to insects and birds. However, the choice is yours.

I agree with above - depends which plants are in question. If the seed heads look interesting and could be a potential food source for wildlife, I leave them until spring. But if it's something like White Snake Root - No way Jose!

I try to tidy up Crocosmias, (though they didn't get done this autumn) but like the others I tend to leave anything the birds might like. I have never seen any white snake root but anything pesky has to come out...

I'm a terror for this. I always start out determined to leave the sedums etc. for the frost. But then we get so much rain that they just rot. December is the month when everything that hasn't already been hacked back gets taken. Hosta leaves and stems, Phlox stems, crocosmias, hardy geraniums....they all get a haircut. I remove the leaves of my winter flowering hellebores as well, and try to get every single rose leaf off the soil to prevent the spread of black spot. Thus the garden looks neat over the winter months and I don't encourage slugs to hide in the detritus....and we do have a terrible slug problem here. What I really need is a duck! ;)

Lol Karen, when I read your blogs it makes me realise what a messy and incompetent gardener I really am when you come down to it....

No Stera...just a different gardener to me. I could be a lot more relaxed about it! X

« I wonder what it's like to garden on greensand? found in Wiltshire and dorset
Depends on the plant IMO
I leave on mainly as I think frosted dead heads are quite attractive in their own right, plus of course insects etc hide in them, or birds eat the seeds
