Six years ago we were bought a Standard Rose for a special anniversary. It was from a very reputably grower. But it never seemed to be a good shape. I am just in the process of pruning it,but the one side is very weak and actually looks dead. Is there any way I can try to revive it and to try to form a better shape.

That is tricky. You could prune the other side so the buds are facing in the other direction to fill out the space. Does that make sense?

Mmm sort of. If I really hard prune the stronger side would it strengthen the weaker side do you think ??

Oooh...Cazoo..that's a poor looking Standard Rose. I see your dilemma. But tbh, the strong side doesn't look great either. Cutting it hard back will promote stronger growth..but only on that section. However, I think it is your only option at this stage. So I recommend you cut it very hard back on the stronger side. Hopefully that will make it send out new shoots all around and that will hide the dead side and hopefully you will eventually get a decent shaped plant. To be honest, if it were mine, I would take it out and replace it with a better one. Is the rose called 'Special Anniversary'? Because that is a very strong growing rose. I just removed one from here. I never liked the colour or the very large leathery leaves. It does however have wonderful scent. :)

You know what Cottagekarer you are right.... I am going to prune it back.... take it out of the pot... pop it into the garden and let it do its own thing. It is called "Golden Celebration" and the few roses we have had have been glorious and the scent heaven made. Looking at the price to buy now between £40 / £60 its a shame to just throw it away.....so into the garden it goes. Many Thanks for the advice tho.

Gosh! I hadn’t realised it was in a pot! Great idea! Give it a really good feed and it will reward you. Ah yes...that’s a lovely rose..much prettier than ‘special Anniversary’.

yes I didn't know it was in a pot. It will be very 'hungry' so a good feed is essential. follow the dosage instructions as over feeding can also cause problems.

How do I say thanks?
