I want to dig up an astrantia plant, clear it of weeds and ever encroaching cerinthy. Last year it had grown weak and gone in a hump with grass growing through it. When should I dig it up? Should I try to split it? Any advice is welcome.

Thanks Derek, I hoped I could do it now although I think it will wait until the monsoon season is over. Will it ever stop raining?

Yes it is good now, but obs wait until you don't get blown / washed away!
I have a large clump to split and I tend to keep the pieces from the outer edge of the clump and discard the woodier/older centre. to help spot weed roots wash the pieces in a bucket of water and then you will spot grass easier.

Thanks Seaburngirl that sounds like good advice. Can't wait to get back into the garden. There is so much to do.

Hi, now would be a good time to dig it up, before regrowth starts, but you may find it difficult to separate the roots from the weed roots, and the Cerinthe, btw it is a clump forming perennial, so this is normal, Derek.
