i have a mother in laws tongue,
want to pot on to a bigger pot,
will john innes no. 3 be suitable ?

Yes, but I would add some grit to the compost as this plant likes well drained compost.

I would use quite a large proportion of Cactus and Succulent compost in your potting soil or else add some grit. This will help with good drainage. I've found some brands of JI can be pretty fine and tend to compact too much. As Owdboggy says good drainage is paramount. But these plants are hard to kill so no need to stress...

I am not an expert but potted mine on last summer with Westland Houseplant Potting Mix. I have also had these before and have treated them just the same. I can't remember what I used then. However, as Steragram says, these plants are very hardy. Even I haven't managed to kill one off yet!
