We trimmed our rose of Sharon yesterday. However we did not touch last year’s dead blooms. How do we remove them?

Are you sure they aren't seed pods? They usually split open to release the seeds.

use secateurs and snip them off like you would dead roses. or you could use shears and give it a light trim all over.
