Please can someone help to identify this plant which is growing in our hedge. It has leaves reminiscent of hornbeam/Hazel but the bark is confusing as on one hand it is smooth but also a large part of the bark is quite gnarled....any suggestions?

Ah, is that the Spindle Tree? Is it used in native hedging?
