I have an very large Cordyline Sundance plant in a raised bed.
It was in the garden when I moved in, I would like any advice on how it can be moved, it must have been here for over 20 years because of height and growth (several meters each way), the bottom of the plant looks cabbage like and has no tree trunk in fact I am no gardener but would describe it as a big fan shaped habit of growth from the base, with lovely long leaves which emerge reddish and then turn green with striped edges, there was no label attached, (and why would there be after all this time), but looking at photos on the internet it looks like a Cordyline Sundance Australis cabbage plant.
I would like my husband to remove half of the plant from its present location in the raised bed and plant half into our garden, would anyone be able to advise me as to if this is a good idea or would I damage the plant and cause it to die if we go ahead and cut it in half to propergate it.
Thanks for any info would be appreciated, I don't like the idea of killing the poor thing off.

Sorry can't add photo, wish I could.

a photo would be helpful, but from your description, it's not a Cordyline, its a Phormium. If it is, then you need to wait till late September then dig the whole thing up, split (use a breadknife, its easier) between a set of fans and replant the sections. You can risk doing it sooner after we've had plenty of rain, but keeping the sections you replant watered sufficiently will be very difficult ongoing throughout the rest of spring and summer. If its as big as you seem to be describing, digging it all up will require a fair amount of time, effort and strength to get the roots out more or less intact! Much easier if the soil is nice and wet...
