Isn't that the fun of it? Plant it and see what comes up. It may take a year or two.

When you replant leave at least part of the thick bit of root (the rhizome) above the soil so the sun can shine on it. Otherwise you'll get no flowers.

Stera, that works for the various kinds of bearded Iris, other species like to be planted deeper. I'll admit that the leaves look broad enough to be a bearded type.

Thanks very much all. I have replanted with the rhizome just exposed on the surface so hopefully will suit whatever variety it is. Thanks and will probably have a few more IDs coming up..... Moved back into our house (with large garden) last year after renting for 8 years and new green stuff popping up all the time. Want to try and ID most things so know how to care etc to get garden looking nice.
