Iris species id please.
I was given this iris a couple of years ago and it has flowered for the first time this week. Sadly the lady who gave me it died shortly after I was given it.
it doesn't appear to be rhizomatous. the leaves are 'hard' and about 1cm wide and 18" long. The flower stalk is less than 12", the flower is no more than 2" wide and tall.
She thought it was a species rather then a cultivar but I don't know.

The foliage looks like a Spuria hybrid, bu I'm having a hard time finding a color match. The picture is a little unclear: is there a beard on the falls? If so, it's not a Spuria.

They don't have beards, I thought I'd put that in my question, sorry Tug.

Hmm...Spurias are rhizomatous, but the rhizomes are short. The foliage doesn't look like a "Dutch" Iris, but that doesn't keep it from being one of their bulbous ancestors or cousins from north Africa or Spain. I'll keep looking, when I'm not running out of time! :)

Bless you Tug I have been pouring through my books too. My garden is very dry so I don't want to excavate to check the roots. Memory suggests a rootstock like Iris siberica or a very skinny rhizome that is below soil surface.
It certainly isn't a dutch iris I have plenty of those in the garden and the leaf is more like the ones you get on I unguicularis.

Looks like one of the Pacific coast hybrids which I used to grow.

Another friend of this lady has said it is a Pacific coast hybrid, Broadleigh Ann and she has several of it flowering well now.
so thanks for all your help. It's nice to have a name for it at last.

*smack head* I forgot all about the Pacific Coast hybrids! Ah, well, it's good to know what it is, anyway.

I only have a dim recollection of them existing but I have done a little reading up. the only problem it will have is its in alkaline soil so I will have to give it beech leaf mould top dressing. They are beautiful plants.
