Last year I visited David Austins garden centre and purchased two rambling roses called minnihaha. I had decided on this variety as I had seen it on display there over a pergola, it was a bright pink and the ones I bought were in flower at the time. However they are just coming into bloom and the colour has changed, no longer bright pink but a wishy washy peachy pink. Can the colour change, they were planted against the house in a mixture of John innes no3 and some garden compost incorporated with fish blood and bone. Can anyone advise ?

Most of them aren't opened up yet, so it may be they will be more pink once they are. As for colours changing, yes, I'm afraid they can - peach to pink or the other way around is quite a common one. This anomaly is not due to soil ph. Peter Beales also sells this rose - they describe the colour of the flowers as 'light pink'.

That is disappointing. I did a quick google images search and most images have deep rich pink as you saw on display. But a few are paler. Im hopeful that as yours mature they will develop good colour, bit I agree with Seaburngirl..its worth contacting the seller. Im wondering if theres anything we can do Bamboo...to stop it happening if its not soil ph? My first thought was climate...but then I saw that Sjw lives in Gloucestershire. Not a cold county! If it had been nearer to me in Scotland I wouldn’t have been surprised as my first roses of the year are often paler in colour. You don’t think it might be a rootstock issue?

Thanks for your replies, have sent David Austin an email, strange it was deep pink last year when I bought in flower. Will have to be moved if it stays that insipid colour as it just doesn’t show up against the stone of the house. Can anyone recommend a repeat flowering deep pink climbing rose, I would be very grateful.

Dorothy Perkins is a good pink rambler but only flowers once in a season, like the Minihaha you bought, which isn't repeat flowering. Most ramblers flower all at once for about six weeks during summer, they are not repeat flowering.
If you want a repeat flowering climbing rose, there's Pink Perpetue, but it only gets about 8 or 9 feet tall, though it is vigorous and wide spreading, so a good choice for covering a fence or wall.

Thanks Karen, I have a zepherine Drouhin but she does suffer from mildew on new growth even though I spray with an anti fungal. The other rose you recommended is out of stock. Will wait to hear back from David Austin and keep you updated.

You're welcome. It's hard to get Roses in Summer unless you buy them in pots from the GC. Best wait till the autumn and buy it bare-rooted. Cheaper and better in the long-run.

Some plants produce their first flowers in a paler colour and as the season develops so does the colour. I think I'd ring them and ask their advice. I am not aware that rose colour is soil pH dependent but it might be.
