I gave my son and his partner some tomato plant last year which they put in their conservatory; they carried on in their pots over the winter and are now bearing fruit again. Is this unusual?

Agree, they will keep going. It's only the cold weather that kills them. Peppers too! You should pot up your pepper plants and bring them inside for the winter - they make nice house plants. Then put them back outside next Spring - they will continue producing.

Not that unusual. Unless they are allowed to freeze or fry--as they sometimes do where I live--tomato plants can live for several years. I would just give them a selective pruning, and regular feeding, to keep new growth coming.
