need more info really how tall and how wide is the flower as this will affect the final id.
could be a fleabane; Erigeron karvinskianus, foliage matches.

Hi Eileen, thanks for your help. The plant is 24 inches tall, flowers are 1 inch diameter, the leaves are 2 inches lance type leaves. It's rather scraggly looking with only 1 single stem.

Could well be an aster going by those dimesnsions but it seems early. The asters have had a renaming session due to work on their DNA.

You are right. Asters have been reclassified in the 1990s. I don't know how anybody can keep tract of which asters are in what sub-category but there are cultivated asters and there are wild asters. I think this belongs to the later.

It's a Fleabane. Wild Asters--by whatever name--have a single row of 1/8"-1/4" wide "petals" around the central disk. Fleabanes have 2-3 rows of narrower "petals" around the disk.
Hmmm...maybe Eastern Daisy Fleabane (Erigeron annuus)?
