I am going to plant a clematis to grow up an obelisk. Where should I plant the clematis in relation to the obelisk....against the obelisk, or in the centre?

either as long as the roots get a little bit of shade and are not tight against a wall or fence.
if the clematis is tied onto canes then loosen those ties and guide the stems up different parts of the obelisk.
