I prune hedges now for a winter tidy and again in apr - may for spring, But I personally wouldn't do it any later than early oct, as the new growth can be burnt by frosts and looks ugly through the winter and can cause bacterial damage, with the possible results of a, worst case scenario, disfigured hedges.
